Thrips

Trips is a pest insect that causes great damage in vegetable cultivation. The most common species in greenhouses is the California thrips and the Tobacco strips. Royal Brinkman Canada offers a wide range of products for the biological control of thrips in a variety of crops.

Recognize and signalize thrips

Thrips are yellow to dark brown in color. Detecting and recognizing thrips in time is very important. This will prevent damage to the crop as much as possible. Thrips bite into the surface tissue of the plant, causing the cells to collapse. This can cause the leaf to dry out.

Types of thrips

The number of species of thrips causing damage has been increasing in recent years. The most common and damaging forms of thrips in greenhouse crops are the California thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) and the tobacco thrips (Thrips tabaci). Pepper thrips (Thrips parvispinus) is another type that has been showing up in more and more crops in recent years.

How to control thrips using biological methods

Thrips, which are common on flowers and leaves, are a recurring challenge in vegetable cultivation. Traditional chemical pesticides face problems because of the resistance of many thrips species to the active ingredients. In addition, the withdrawal of a large number of approved crop protection products further complicates the situation. An effective and sustainable solution lies in biological control of common thrips. Natural enemies such as predatory mites and predatory bugs appear to play an important role in controlling and reducing thrips-related problems in vegetable crops.

Thrips biological control

Biological control of thrips is increasingly used with the help of natural enemies. Especially predatory mites and predatory bugs are used as natural enemies of thrips. You can find the following predatory mites and bugs in our assortment to treat thrips:

> AMBLYbugline (Amblyseius cucumeris): is used in culture bags. It can also be used in combination with Transeius montdorensis.
AMBLYcontrol and Amblyline (Neoseiulus cucumeris): are predatory mites that feeds mainly on eggs and thrips larvae, but can also reduce populations of broadmites and cyclamenmites.
Power Food: By systematically feeding predatory mites with Power Food, predatory mites are able to reproduce and establish a population in the crop, even in the absence of natural prey.
Anderline: Contains the predatory mite, Amblyseius andersoni. It is a predatory mite that feeds on many types of small arthropod prey and pollen.
SWIRScontrol (Amblyseius swirskii): controls whiteflies and thrips but it will provide some reduction in other small pest species.
