Biological control of whiteflies and thrips
Starskii is a biological control agent based on the predatory mite Amblyseius swirskii. It is primarily used to control whiteflies and thrips but also contributes to reducing other small pest species.
Benefits of Starskii Bug :
- ✅Rapid reproduction: Breeds extremely quickly in warm, humid conditions.
- ✅Targeted pest control: Actively feeds on thrips larvae (L1), whitefly eggs, and young whitefly larvae.
- ✅Longer crop presence: Can feed on pollen in the absence of prey, ensuring long-term survival.
- ✅Cold-tolerant: Survives cooler night temperatures and winters in semi-protected crops.
Main uses
Starskii is used for the biological control of: Western Flower Thrips, Chili Thrips, Onion Thrips, Greenhouse Whitefly & Silverleaf / Potato Whitefly.
How it works
Starskii is ideal for use on protected crops under warm conditions, such as peppers, cucumbers, gerbera, and eggplants. It can also be applied to unprotected crops as long as average daytime temperatures exceed 20°C (68°F). Establishment is fastest on crops with ample pollen, like peppers, as pollen provides an alternative, high-quality food source. In pollen-poor crops, establishment may be slower but can be improved by using sachets that release mites continuously over several weeks. For optimal results, apply Starskii early in the crop or pest cycle to prevent whitefly and thrips buildup. Note: it does not feed on adult pest stages. The mites are active at 20°C (68°F), with increased performance at higher temperatures.
