Steinernema feltiae | Effective nematodes for pest control

Written by Kevin van Kester | Last update: 26. June 2023

The Steinernema feltiae nematode is a natural enemy against pests like thrips, caterpillars, sciarid flies, and leatherjackets. This entomopathogenic nematode employs a partnership with bacteria to locate and eliminate its targets. Its impressive ability to target and control pests makes it a crucial component in integrated pest management for horticulture.

Steinernema feltiae explained

Steinernema feltiae is a highly effective insect parasitic nematode for greenhouse pest control. These nematodes utilize a sophisticated hunting strategy, actively tracking insect larvae by sensing chemical signals and temperature changes. Once they locate their prey, Steinernema feltiae enters the insect’s body and releases symbiotic bacteria. These bacteria rapidly multiply and produce toxins that immobilize and kill the host, making Steinernema feltiae a powerful and natural solution for managing pests.

Which pests can Steinernema feltiae control?

Steinernema feltiae is an effective biological agent for:

  • Sciarid fly control
  • Thrips control
  • Caterpillars control
  • Leatherjackets control

Packaging options for Steinernema feltiae

Our Steinernema feltiae is available in various packaging formats. You can choose from plastic trays with either 50 million or 250 million parasitic nematodes. For larger needs, we offer bulk packaging with five trays, each containing 250 million nematodes. Each tray's composition includes 90% parasitic nematodes, 10% inert ingredients, and water.

How to apply Steinernema feltiae

Steinernema feltiae thrive at soil temperatures between 10°C and 30°C. You can apply them either through spraying or by mixing them with water.

For optimal results, target areas where pests are most prevalent. Steinernema feltiae is versatile and can be used as both a foliar and soil treatment:

  • Foliar Application: Ensure thorough leaf coverage without causing dripping. Maintain a wet period on the leaves for at least 2 hours to ensure the nematodes' effectiveness.
  • Soil Application: After applying the nematodes to the soil, immediately water the area to help the nematodes penetrate the upper soil layer. This should be done either in the morning or evening to avoid direct sunlight, which helps keep the soil moist for longer.

In both methods, the nematodes remain active and effective in moist conditions for up to six weeks.

Application of Steinernema feltiae : A step-by-step guide

Applying Steinernema feltiae effectively involves a few crucial steps:

  • Prepare your equipment: Use standard spraying equipment for application. Make sure to remove all filters smaller than 0.3 mm (300 microns) and choose a spray nozzle with an aperture of 0.5 mm (500 microns) or larger.
  • Set Pump Pressure: Ensure that the pump pressure is no higher than 20 bar (2000 kPa) to avoid damaging the nematodes.
  • Mix the Solution:
    • Pour the entire packet of Steinernema feltiae into a bucket containing 10 litres of lukewarm water at approximately 18°C.
    • Stir thoroughly to ensure the nematodes are well-mixed.
  • Prepare the Spray Tank:
    • Fill the spray container or tank three-quarters full with water.
    • Add the mixed nematode solution to the container.
    • Top up the tank with additional water as needed.
  • Application:
    • Apply the nematode solution immediately after mixing to maintain effectiveness.
    • Continuously stir the solution during application to prevent the nematodes from settling at the bottom.
  • Compatibility: Steinernema feltiae can be used with various plant protection products. For information on compatible tank mixes, consult the guidelines provided or reach out to a crop protection specialist.

How to properly store Steinernema feltiae

Upon receiving your Steinernema feltiae, promptly inspect the product for any discrepancies and report any issues within 24 hours. For best results, use the nematodes immediately upon arrival. If you need to store them, follow these steps:

  • Storage Conditions: Keep the product in a dark location at a temperature between 2°C and 5°C.
  • Packaging: Remove the outer packaging and ensure adequate airflow around the small trays. Avoid storing any packages that appear damaged.
  • Quality Control: Refer to the nematode quality control protocols for detailed guidelines.

Important: Do not retain the spraying solution once it contains nematodes. Use it right after preparation to ensure optimal effectiveness.
