PHYTOcontrol features the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis, renowned for its efficacy in biologically controlling red spider mites. Despite being blind, P. persimilis relies on scent and touch to locate its prey. Applied within a carrier material, it can be evenly distributed over crop leaves. Upon release, these mites promptly initiate the hunt for red spider mites. Their diet exclusively consists of red spider mites, resorting to cannibalism when food is scarce.
An adult P. persimilis can consume up to 5 adult spider mites or 20 spider mite eggs or larvae daily. With a female-to-male ratio of approximately four to one, PHYTOcontrol maximizes reproductive potential. Fertilized females strategically lay eggs within or near spider mite colonies. Under favorable conditions, Phytoseiulus populations outpace spider mite populations. Optimal control of red spider mites is achieved at temperatures ranging from 15 to 30°C.
