Predatory mites for biological pest control

Predatory mites serve as natural enemies to pests. The mites come in various species, each tailored to target specific pests. While some are specialized for spider mite control, others are versatile and can handle multiple pest types. This guide provides an overview of the different predatory mite species available to Canadian growers, their methods of action, and the pests they control.

Predatory mite

To tackle various kinds of spider mite infestations, there are several species available.

  • Phytoseiulus persimilis proves highly effective for control of spider mites. Fertilized females will lay their eggs in or near a spider mite colony. In the right conditions, the predatory mite's population grows faster than the spider mites. This makes Phytoseiulus persimilis highly effective for biological control of spider mites.

  • Amblyseius californicus is a versatile predatory mite that can be used across various crops for spider mite control. This predatory mite thrives in high temperatures and low humidity, making it a resilient and versatile choice. Additionally, its ability to feed on pollen allows for preventive use in crops where pollen is present.

  • Amblyseius andersoni is an effective solution for spider mite control and thrips control. This predatory mite also thrives on pollen and can withstand high temperatures and low humidity, making it suitable for use along greenhouse walls.

  • Amblyseius cucumeris is an effective natural enemy for thrips control and does not harm crops or flowers. This predatory mite also feeds on pollen, making it a great preventive option for pollen-producing crops. Amblyseius cucumeris primarily targets the first larval stage of thrips, but also has a positive side-effect on the biological control of spider mites. Its rapid lifecycle enables quick population growth, which stimulates the biological control of thrips.

  • Amblyseius swirskii, which is commonly known as swirski mite, is a versatile predatory mite for whitefly, thrips, and spider mite control. This mite thrives on vegetable-based foods, including pollen and plant saps, making it suitable for integration into various crops.
